The Miniature Medieval Diele

Middle Ages, 1:10 scale

Rehbinder House Museum -"Leaning on a Chair" Furniture History - Permanent Exhibition 2024

This detailed diorama showcases a medieval living space, with a focus on the hall (diele) featuring a prominent fireplace. The diele was the most important room in the home during the Middle Ages, used for receiving guests, conducting trade agreements, and storing the most valuable possessions. In the home of a craftsman, this space also served as a workspace.

Given the medieval prevalence of rats and mice as a significant problem, the theme is incorporated through an interactive approach. Mice are hidden in every corner of the room, and in the center, a circle dance of mice is activated by turning a spinning wheel, offering visitors a playful interaction with history.
